PDF’s: Save, Edit & Convert Freely

// August 10th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Recommended

Do you ever have receive forms in the form of pdf's that need filling out? Sure, you can print it out and grab a trusty old pen. But wouldn't it be easier to just edit the pdf in whatever application you're in? Of course, applications like Adobe Acrobat have this feature. But it's not exactly the most economical in terms of price (AU$995) and it's footprint on the harddisk. Co-incidently while writing this article I stumbled across an article by ZDnet in which it explains the vast price difference between Acrobat sold in various countries. So surely there's alternatives?Absolutely, plenty of them in fact. And dare I say none of them carry the hefty price tag asscociated with anything Adobe. So I guess it boils down to what it is you need? Do you need to edit a pdf? Or perhaps convert? Both? Or maybe all you want to do is save your work as a pdf file.

For saving pdf's document try: (by using the print option)
CutePDF Writer
doPDF

For converting pdf document try:
http://www.pdftoword.com/ convert to Word documents
http://www.pdftoexcelonline.com/ converts to Excel file format

For editing pdf documents give these links a whirl:

Also when using the Openoffice.org suite, the open source equivalent of Microsoft Office, it's already possible to save as a pdf. However importing can prove a little tricky. To help overcome this issue OpenOffice users should try Sun's PDF Import Extension. Freely available at http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport

And of course to view our pdf's Foxit Reader with its small footprint and responsive interface, makes an excellent alternative!

Any suggestion, feel free to leave a comment!

Picnik - Image editing tools in a basket

Do you manage your own website/blog and find yourself needing to insert a photo here and there but find there's a little tweaking required? Of course no one wants to spend hundreds of dollars on software  unnessacarily. So what makes for a good alternative? In this day and age of online connectivity doesn't it make sense to look for an online solution. Instead of spending money buying software, installing it and finding out it's all a bit too much to handle. For the occasional editor of images being overwhelmed with a plethora of options isn't the most productive. The interface should be clear and simple, yet provide the editor with all the basics at their fingertips and maybe some additional extras that may prove handy down the road.

Let's take a walk to the park, grab a rug, grab a basket and bask in the sunshine while enjoying a picnik. Picnik is an online service which will let you register for free and give you an easy to use interface that's both responsive and quick to understand. Using picnik should be a breeze for the average Joe that needs to resize, rotate, change colours etc.  And for that  extra bit of pizazz one can also use one of the vast amount of effects available.  Wether you're using Windows, Mac or linux image manipulation in your browser has never been easier.  So head on over to www.picnik.com and check it out for yourself. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to leave a response in the comment section.
